4th annual Festival for the World Mental Health Day:"Changing attitudes...All together"

This is the fourth year that the World Mental Health Day is celebrated by SOFPSI N.SERRON during a 4-day festival held on 10-13 October, 2013. With the motto “Changing attitudes…All Together”  SOFPSI N.SERRON called for a change in the attitudes that perpetuate stigma and discrimination promoting the idea of mental illness being associated with community, joy and acceptance.During the 4-day Festival the young were singing and dancing in rhythms they love; the youngsters listened to anti-stigma tales, were educated through anti-discrimination puppet shows and storytellings, drew mental health, and created anti-stigma jewelry; the adults took pride in their children’s and grandchildren’s performances and achievements; their friends were sharing their happiness; horses from the Equestrian Club of Serres entertained the young crowds; a Zumba dance festival kept teenager’s interest for hours; their families and friends participating in their children’s’ happiness were also fighting stigma for hours; traditional and modern dances were performed during the evening shows; the theatre group of the Reintegration Unit of the Psychiatric Hospital of Thessaloniki performed an one-act play and quality poetry written by mental health service users was introduced to the public. The local authorities were more than proud to facilitate SOFPSI N.SERRON in its endeavors and the same stood for health professionals, local media, school boards, other disability, cultural and sports associations. Young and old were present for 5 hours a day during 4 days to celebrate mental health. Approximately 3000 people got together sharing the same passion for the same reason: we are all equal, let’s not discriminate against anybody or be prejudiced. The creation of win-win relationship generated a knock-on effect which proved to be a driver for collaboration in fighting the stigma of mental illness and in promoting a healthy ageing. The success of this festival clearly confirmed SOFPSI’s belief that mental health deserves great festivities for all, old and young, healthy and suffering, stigmatized and stigmatizing.

We are deeply grateful to all those who readily helped, supported and participated in any possible way in this festival of unity and change with the promise that “We will change the world! What matters is to stay human”  (extract from Katerina Gogou’s poem “A time will come”)

5th annual Panhellenic Training Seminar: "From vision to reality"

On 6-10 October, 2013 SOFPSI N.SERRON held its annual panhellenic training seminar, under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Health and Social Solidarity. Entitled “From Vision to Reality” this year’s seminar was mainly dedicated to the Mental Health Recovery Model with the objective to offer participants a reason to keep hoping in recovery, turn the recovery vision into daily practice no matter how harsh the crises they face are and turn crises into opportunities of getting stronger. Sixty consumers, carers and mental health professionals from all overGreeceattended the event.

The first part of the seminar was dedicated to the recovery process. The second focus was the recovery-oriented mental health and human rights legal framework of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the role of mentalhealth service users, family members and their supporting organizationsin implementing and monitoring implementation of the UNCRPD.The other main focus was toenable both mental health service users and family members to bring about real changes in their lives and close the skills gap through building a powerful self and their capacity as advocates for equity.

The perspectives offered a comprehensive overview since the speakers came from the Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation of Boston University, the Global Alliance of Mental Illness Advocacy Networks (GAMIAN-Europe), the Greek Association for Regional Development and Mental Health (EPAPSY), and SOFPSI’s specialists in mental health law and clinical psychology. The audience appreciated both the theoretical and practical insights the speakers brought from their experience and insights.

SOFPSI’s panhellenic training seminar has been established for five years as the only event inGreeceto bring together consumers, carers and mental health professionals and to enhance collaboration by giving consumers and carers a voice and mental health professionals a chance to understand that what consumers and carers want is critical to delivering recovery-promoting collaborative care.

SOFPSI N.SERRON would like to thank Johnson & Johnson, Janssen-Cilag and Fund Storm Rehabilitation for their generous financial support to cover participant’s travel, accommodation, meals and other seminar related expenses, and the speakers, and participants for their engagement and energy in making this seminar a real success and in turning the Vision into Reality!
